Even though this cel would not interest many Escaflowne fans, I was really attracted to it. A lot of people don’t like the long noses on the characters and avoid profile cels. Personally, I don’t mind and view the noses as a characteristic of the show. The two features that attracted me were the beautiful colors in the background and the subtle smile on Folken’s face. In this scene he is in the hangar of the Vione talking to Dilandau while they’re approaching the captured Escaflowne.

I was a little surprised when the cel arrived. What seemed like a simple background ended up being a combination of four layers. Two are in watercolors on paper and two are in acrylic on acetate.
