Fan Cel
On the left is a large and very beautiful fan cel of Pirotess from the Record of the Lodoss War, OVA. On the right is a image of her that is commonly seen online. It may be hard to tell from the scan, but this cel is very well done. In fact, I suspect the artist works in the anination field. When I look at the cel closely, the black lines appear to be machine made and not hand inked. There are also many areas that are hand outlined in colored paint and then filled in with closely matching paint. The acetate has tap holes. Still, there are obvious differences. This is not unusual. Most fan cel artists are well aware of the risk of their work being passed of as original in the future. Many will either sign their work in an inconspicuous location or will intentionally insert “mistakes”. In this case, the differences are obvious. Even accounting for the differences in scanners, some of the colors (especially her hair, sword and jewelry) are completely wrong. Considering the skill this artist displays in painting this image, I have no doubt these differences were created on purpose. If this had been a dishonest person, I am sure (s)he could have replicated the image almost perfectly.
