Movie Versus TV Cel
This is a cel from the TV show Rurouni Kenshin. Cels from TV shows or OVAs (which were designed to be watched on TVs) are shaped to fit the size of old TV screens. It was not until after animation went to CG that television screens changed shape to match the proportions of movie screens.
This is a cel from the movie Spriggan. You can see that the cel and background are proportionally longer than the cel designed for the TV screen. Another interesting thing is that movie cels not only have different proportions than TV/OVA cels, but some of them are larger overall. This is because the image needs to be projected onto a much larger screen in the theaters. Rather than have to deal with trying to paint really tiny areas of detail, some studios elected to use bigger cels.
