Separate Layers Adding Up
The first layer (the A layer), which is of the character’s neck, is to the left. His head is by itself on the second layer as shown below.
Here the head layer was placed on top of the neck layer and then scanned.
I have not covered backgrounds yet, but here is a typical background that matches with this cel. All the cel layers together with the background is called a setup.
